Is the lock Grave a bottleneck in the “Kleine Ruit” as part of the Zandmaas/Maasroute given the expected growth of transport by barges, recreational traffic and other possible traffic? A simulation model has been created to verify the decision made by the government to reinstate the old lock of Grave in 2010 as recreational lock. Important developments are the expected increase in barge size, the expected modal shift as a result of the higher utilization of the road infrastructure, the possible congestion on the “Waal” (for example after a disaster) and the possible decreasing sand and gravel transport in Brabant and Limburg. The simulation model showed that the investments for the reinstatement of the old lock are not required in the scenarios that were evaluated during the study.
