Design of a new coil shipping bay at the Severstal steel plant in Columbus, Mississippi. The objective of the project was to determine if the envisioned new coil shipping bay size was sufficient. The new shipping bay will be connected to the existing shipping bays with high speed coil cars. A 3D simulation model has been created with the shipping bays both for rail and truck shipping, the manual and automatic cranes with the bridge, trolley and hoist acceleration, deceleration and speeds, multiple wrappers, high speed coil cars, 2 galvanization lines and a tempering line. The results of the study indicated several bottlenecks when the production volumes are increased. It also allowed Severstal to explore alternative solutions in order to meet their production objectives.
